Fenugreek is an annual herb native to the Mediterranean region, Southern Europe, and Western Asia. It typically grows to a height of 30–60 cm (1–2 feet). The plant has slender stems with small, oblong, green leaves arranged alternately. Its flowers are small, usually white or pale yellow, and grow in clusters. After flowering, it produces small, elongated, three-cornered pods, each containing several seeds.

Seeds:
Fenugreek seeds are small, hard, and yellowish-brown, with a slightly bitter taste and a strong, distinctive aroma. They are the most commonly used part of the plant in cooking and traditional medicine.

Uses:

  • Culinary: Fenugreek seeds and leaves are used as spices, flavoring agents, or herbs in Indian, Middle Eastern, and North African cuisines. Seeds are often roasted or ground into powder, while fresh or dried leaves are used as herbs.

  • Medicinal: Traditionally, fenugreek is used to aid digestion, improve lactation, reduce inflammation, regulate blood sugar, and support heart health.

  • Agricultural: It is also grown as a green manure crop due to its nitrogen-fixing properties.

Active Compounds:
Fenugreek contains saponins, flavonoids, alkaloids (like trigonelline), fiber, and proteins that contribute to its health benefits.

Interesting Fact: Fenugreek seeds smell somewhat like maple syrup when cooked or roasted.
